As the first full “work week” of 2009 begins, I’m doing a lot of observing.

Observing others, to create an even greater awareness of what QUALITIES and ACTIONS are most responsible for their successes in their personal, professional, familial, relationship, and even their spiritual life. And to notice what qualities and actions hold them back from the success they desire.

Observing myself, to notice what qualities I possess and what actions I’m taking that are either hindering my quest for success, or enhancing my ability to experience the success that I desire and deserve.

In many – if not most – cases, I already have an awareness about what I’m noticing. But it’s always good to be reminded.

One of the most essential keys to success seems to be “discipline.” That is, having the willigness (because we ALL have the ability) to remain focused on a clear, powerful vision (your desired optimal outcome) and on the specific tasks that will help you achieve that vision.

Distractions are endless. Media interruptions (which is why for more than 20 years I haven’t watched television, listened to the radio, read newspapers or magazines, or devoted any time or attention to similar matters). Family desires and demands. Friends who want your time and attention. “Bright shiny objects of desire” – and for anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit these include virtually ANY “good idea” or seemingly good business opportunity. I could write a list of distractions that would take you 20 minutes to read, and still not cover all of what vies for your attention.

Discipline is simple, but not necessarily easy (because distractions are omnipresent). All it takes is staying focused, and to that end, you can employ numerous strategies, tools and techniques. The easiest of which is committing to a specific amount of time daily (or at regular intervals) during which you do NOTHING BUT those tasks that are directly associated with the goals you desire to achieve and forward your progess toward those ends. Allow no interruptions or distractions. Lock yourself in a room with only the tools you need to work on your tasks if necessary.

Discipline is not the ONLY key to success. But without it, it’s likely that you’ll not achieve the success you desire, if you achieve any success at all.
